Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, that an Indian helicopter entered Nepali airspace in Darchula on the morning of June 10 because of bad weather, poor visibility, and difficult terrain, not due to any deliberate or harmful intention. The aircraft was reportedly carrying ITBP Director General Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor and was seen near Chhangru in Vyas Rural Municipality-1 while heading towards the Kalapani area.

Government Explanation

Khanal told lawmakers that Nepali authorities are in contact with the Indian side regarding the incident. He said the government has found no sign of planned violation and described the matter as linked to weather and geography.

Border Discussion

The Foreign Minister also said Nepal remains firm on its claim over Kalapani, Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Susta. He added that these border matters should be settled through diplomatic talks, historical documents, maps and factual evidence.

Susta Embankment Issue

Khanal said a joint inspection was recently carried out by Nepal’s APF and India’s SSB in the Susta area. India reportedly did not object to the embankment being built inside Nepali land, but further talks are needed before extending the work by another 132 metres.

Diplomatic Way Forward

The government said border coordination mechanisms are still active and technical teams are continuing their work. Khanal stressed that Nepal will continue protecting its territorial position while resolving differences with India through dialogue and mutual understanding.
